Should public schools teach both evolution and creationism?

Not as equivalents
Toni King, Unity Minister, Unity Center of Reno

Some cling to science as proven fact, but our understanding of the known universe has barely scratched the surface with dark matter outweighing visible matter by six to one, per CERN. Our own planet remains delightfully enigmatic as thousands of new species are discovered every year! Having intellectual confidence that everything is already known on any given topic seems absurd. Yet, nowhere in the vast halls of science is anyone hypothesizing a planet can be created in six days. Evolution is a settled theory. Teaching creationism as science is akin to the lunch lady swapping out chicken nuggets for an erupting baking-soda-and-vinegar-volcano as the main course. In Philosophy class? Sure. Comparative Religion? Yes, please. Alongside evolution? Maybe consider homeschooling.

Meanwhile, Creator-God divinely inspires the reach of human consciousness to exceed our grasp, “or what’s a heaven for?” While ultimate Truth remains mysterious, the light of understanding distills chaos into order.

Reno Gazette Faith Forum is produced by religious statesman Rajan Zed. Can religion evolve without losing its essence?Evolve or become obsoleteToni King, Unity Minister, Unity Center of RenoReligions, while inspired by God, are directed by humans: well-meaning spiritual leaders of the world who listen to the plight of their people and respond effectually with compassion. So, it shouldn’t mean the disintegration of a faith system just to stay current with the changing needs of society. Change can be slow, but it doesn’t necessitate throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Religions’ essence matters. Heck, the first Christmas wasn’t celebrated until the fourth century because that’s when Hellenistic Jews started recognizing birthdays. It was over a thousand years later before Christmas trees were incorporated from a pagan Yule tradition. But it wasn’t until 1982 that this well-known symbol of Christmas could be found at the Vatican. Society’s influence doesn’t affect the pure essence of religion, e.g., spiritual fulfillment, acts of goodwill, etc., because these are based on peace, love, and compassion. And that never goes out of style. ... See MoreSee Less

Reno Gazette Journal Faith Forum questions: How does one cultivate inner peace amid life’s natural chaos?PracticeToni King, Unity Minister, Unity Center of RenoTo be sure, everyone would prefer the “easy button” when seeking to be the eye of the storm, but calm amid chaos requires practice, marrying time with intention. Prepare by choosing a simple awe-inspiring mantra/sutra, short scripture passage, or the purest idea of your Being to work with, e.g., om-mani-padme-hum, “I am the way…”, or Divine Light. Beginning at your emotional baseline and seated comfortably in a safe space with eyes closed, without forcing or any expectation of a particular experience or outcome (this is vital!), wait for a space to appear between thoughts and introduce your special word or phrase. When you notice your mind has wandered off, gently return your attention to the present and reintroduce the chosen thought/idea. Continue this pattern for several repetitions working up to twenty minutes, two or three times a day. With practice, inner chaos quells, bending towards Light, as inner peace prevails. ... Reno Gazette Journal Faith Forum question: Should religious symbols be allowed in public schools or government buildings?Like the Ten Commandments?Toni King, Unity Minister, Unity Center of RenoI can see how school projects where every child does a presentation of something unique about either their own religion or a religion they’re curious about and displays a poster board with religious symbols could be fascinating while aligning with the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Imagine the positive outcomes of mind-expanding education the youth of America could be directly exposed to as a result! Afterall, if it becomes a requirement by the government for a certain religious document to be displayed in classrooms, it seems only fair that other religions’ documents or icons be displayed in equal measure. That we’re founded on religious freedom is the opposite of cramming a particular religion down our collective throat. But I’m sure fine lawmakers in a few select Southern states aren’t intending to assert dominance over families with what isn’t considered by everyone to be a culturally relevant document, right? ... Sunday Sneak Peek

We inspire and foster Spiritual Growth in One another and in the community.

Rev. Toni King’s Lesson: Spark of Divinity

Society’s rhetoric is overwhelming our conversations and leaving less room for real human connection. If we can get better about recognizing fact from fiction, it may be easier to disengage from the chaos and return to a presence of peace.
Affirmation: I bless the world with thoughts of peace.
