Should religious communities engage in social movements?

Move with Spirit
Toni King, Unity Minister, Unity Center of Reno

Whenever possible, and in alignment with spiritual principles, religious communities have a spiritual responsibility to move with a purpose to serve humanity. Social movements can take many forms: community interfaith work, affirming the inherent worth of all people by celebrating Pride Month and participating in community events that honor those among us who are traditionally marginalized, serving on an Earthcare team, visiting prisons or VA hospitals to spend time with those of us who my feel forgotten by society.

Social movements become spiritual action when we give of the Light that we are to the places in society that suffer in darkness. When we pay attention to the still, small voice, we are divinely guided to serve one another in ways and in places that call to our hearts for attention. Spiritual social action is remembering that “the least of us” is who we are meant to lift up.

Rev. Toni King’s Lesson: Strength in Peace

Inner peace is an awareness of one’s own divinity. Its Hebrew root, shin-lamed-mem, carries an understanding of wholeness and perfection. Self-realization of this abiding Truth reveals our strength followed by more peace.
Affirmation: Secure in the indwelling Presence of God, I find strength in peace.

Tuesdays, April 7 – 28th, 5:30 – 6:30pm
Meditation

Stephen Jacobs will be hosting a four-part meditation class at the Nevada Museum of Art, located in downtown Reno. This class is open to all levels, but is particularly helpful for anyone that may feel that they do not know how to meditate, or that their mind will never be able to settle down. On these four Tuesdays you will be taught a different technique each week, which you can then take home and use on your own.
